ABOUT EDGE OF THE WOODS

My work focuses on issues women face, particularly motherhood and caretaking. Becoming a mother fundamentally changed my practice and made me a better artist). I don’t think I could be the artist I am now without having become a mom.

I have three children - Harrison (10), Margot (6), and River (4). In November of 2023, my daughter was diagnosed with Stage 4 High Risk Neuroblastoma. Neuroblastoma is a cancer of the sympathetic nervous system that develops in the immature nerve cells (neuroblasts). Because of how this cancer presents, it’s incredibly hard and painful to treat and requires all modes of treatment. Margot underwent 13 rounds of chemotherapy, surgery, two bone marrow transplants, radiation and another 5 rounds of immunotherapy. She almost died after her second transplant due to a bleed in her lungs, a rare complication that required multiple weeks in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Almost 2 full years of treatment.

And then, almost as fast as life changed at diagnosis, it was over (aside from imaging every few months). She is stable. Objectively, great news.

Edge of the Woods is about navigating this phase after treatment. During treatment, it felt like we were at the hospital more than at home and that “new normal” felt like this anthology of a disconnected life . And then, you’re done (sort of) and you go back to “normal normal,” only that doesn’t exist for me anymore. After treatment has been a whole new beast for me, mom and caregiver, to figure out. All of the sudden you’re barely (hopefully) at the hospital, eventually all the tubes come out and her immune system bounces back - only, I’m still constantly evaluating her. Now I’m left with more time as just mom and less time as nurse. It’s a special kind of PTSD. Edge of the Woods is me beginning to process what it has felt like to make our way through a forest, now looking out into a clearing. It feels calm out there. But standing at the edge, knowing everything that is right behind us, is scary. An unstable place.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Cory Favre is a visual artist and mother living and working in Roseville, MN. She graduated from Ball State University and is an alumni of the Women’s Art Institute Studio Intensive program. She has also served on the Board of Directors from the Women’s Art Resources of Minnesota. Cory is the recipient of two Minnesota State Art Board grants - An Artist Initiative Grant in 2020 for her White Knuckled Project and a Creative Support Grant in 2022 for her work on motherhood that culminated in her solo exhibition, The Thick of It in 2023.

Cory primarily works in drawing and painting (oils), but has recently been experimenting with felt and embroidery in her pieces. Inspired by social issues and politics, particularly those issues facing women, she explores uncomfortable themes through bright fun imagery to draw the viewer in. Creating a space for people to connect and have conversations about things that might otherwise be overlooked.
