Form+Content Gallery Internship Program Application Information
The objective of the internship program is to offer practical gallery training and experience to individuals interested in pursuing careers in the arts and museum fields. Interns will gain knowledge, hands on experience and an intimate understanding of how a small cooperative gallery operates, serves its members and serves the larger community.
Intended for upper level college students, graduate students and those interested in engagement in visual arts, art history, gallery and museum studies and related fields, unpaid volunteer internships at Form+Content Gallery are available throughout the academic year on a part-time basis. Internships may be undertaken for academic credit or by individual contract. When taken for credit, internships require a time commitment of 48 (1 cr.), 96 (2 cr.) or 144 hours (3 cr.). All interns are supervised and mentored by Form+Content gallery members.
Comprehensive Internships
Comprehensive Internship (1 – 3 credits, 48-144 hours)
Comprehensive internships provide a well-rounded experience of the collective art gallery through participation with members in most aspects of the organization. The Comprehensive fall and spring internships correspond to the academic semester and run from early September through December and January through early May respectively. Summer internships run from May through August.
Interns will participate in and assist gallery members with the activities that support gallery function: monthly gallery member meetings, exhibit design, installation and lighting, deinstallation, gallery sitting, publicity, receptions, and participation in and documentation of gallery events.
Intern schedules are overseen by the Internship Coordinator in consultation with gallery members involved in the exhibitions scheduled and under preparation during the intern’s time with us.
Project Directed Internship (when available)
Project Directed Internship (1 credit, 48 hours)
Project Directed Interns work directly with an individual gallery member who is creating or curating an exhibition on exhibition planning, gallery preparation, receiving and returning artwork, installation, lighting, tear down, publicity, mailing and reception and events. The intern will be supervised and mentored by participating gallery member(s).
Internship Information
Weekly time commitments will vary during the internship. We will work with interns to create a workable schedule. However, interns must have enough flexible time in their schedules to respond to the time constraints of gallery/members’ needs.
Interns are expected to keep an internship journal (including time spent, activities and responses to what they are observing/learning), to be emailed to Internship Coordinator at the conclusion of the internship. The journal and evaluations from gallery members form the basis for awarding credit and provide substance for future letters of recommendation.
Although F+C internships are unpaid, we host a biennial intern exhibition for the interns who have been with us in the previous two years, financially supported by the gallery, in order to thank and promote our intern artists/arts administrators.
